Branded Merchandise Packaging Specification Guide
A packaging specification guide for custom goods, gift kits, retail merch, event boxes, inserts, labels, and kitting requirements.
Specify packaging around the actual product and how it will be packed, transported and opened. A branded box render does not confirm internal fit, transit protection or production feasibility.
Define the contents and pack-out
List every item that goes into the pack, its relevant dimensions and weight, and how it should be arranged. Include inserts, cards, tissue, bags or other components. State whether the contents arrive individually packed and who is responsible for assembly.
| Specification | What to include |
|---|---|
| Fit | Product dimensions, internal packaging dimensions and required clearance |
| Structure | Opening style, closure and any insert or divider |
| Material | Required properties and the exact proposed material specification |
| Artwork | Approved dieline version, logo files, print areas, colors and finish |
| Protection | Transport mode, fragile contents and the checks the packed sample must pass |
| Assembly | Pack-out sequence, included components, labels and approval owner |
| Delivery | Flat-packed or assembled supply, destination and required date |
Keep the dieline and artwork tied together
Use the dieline confirmed for the proposed packaging. Check its units, folds, cut lines, print areas and the producer’s stated artwork requirements before approving a proof. Changing dimensions, material or structure can invalidate an earlier dieline; request an updated proof rather than stretching old artwork to fit.
Inspect the complete physical sample
Check the filled pack as well as the empty packaging. Confirm fit, closure, assembly steps, readable artwork and whether components move or rub during handling. Agree the relevant transport or protection checks for the use case. A visual approval alone does not establish transit performance.
Make claims specific and supported
If recycled content, recyclability or certification matters, ask for evidence covering the exact material and finished construction. Separate a design preference from a verified property, and consider the destination’s disposal options before choosing on-pack wording. Avoid treating a material label as proof for every coating, insert or component in the final pack.
Share the completed specification with MerchandAise for review. Supported structures and decoration can be assessed against the brief; a new construction, unusual contents or an unverified protection requirement needs feasibility review before price, quantity or timing is confirmed.
How to use this packaging specification guide
Use these checks before approving a custom merchandise quote, supplier shortlist, or repeat-order program.
Fit and contents
Record the contents, dimensions, weight and internal clearance, including inserts and the intended pack-out.
Material and artwork version
Tie the proposed material, structure, finish and artwork to the confirmed dieline. Request an updated proof when the specification changes.

Branded Merchandise Packaging Specification Guide FAQ
What should a branded packaging brief include?
Include the contents and their dimensions and weight, internal fit, structure, material, approved dieline, artwork, inserts, packing sequence, quantity, destination and required date.
Why check a filled packaging sample?
A filled sample lets you check product fit, closure, assembly, readable artwork and movement inside the pack. Agree the relevant transport or protection checks; a render alone does not establish transit performance.
